Target Team Finishes 26th in the “Irish Hills” of Michigan
BROOKLYN, Mich. (August 19, 2012) – Juan Pablo Montoya and the Target team returned to the newly resurfaced Michigan International Speedway for the second time this season. The No. 42 Chevrolet started in the 25th position and had an eventful race as Montoya battled with handling early on and then rebounded only to have a tire shred which put a halt to a top-10 run. The Target team would have to settle for a 26th-place finish at the close of the race.
As the Pure Michigan 400 got underway, the Target team took advantage of the early caution flags to make adjustments to the No. 42 Chevrolet. Montoya battled some handling concerns in the opening laps. The handling came around and Montoya made his move toward the front. That charge would be cut short as Montoya radioed in a tire rub on lap 142. Shortly after, the tire blew and caused damage to the left front fender. Montoya would make an extended stop on pit road for repairs and return to the track four laps down. The Target Chevrolet crossed the finish line in 26th-position when the 200-lap race concluded.
“Well anything that could go wrong today did,” Montoya remarked. “We finally got the car handling better and then the tire let go. We didn’t realize just how bad it was until we came down pit road. The guys worked quickly to get me back out on the track but we still lost a lot of positions - a rough day all around for the Target team.”
- Montoya had a fender rub that caused a tire to go down and shred the fender. The No. 42 spent 4 laps on pit road making repairs.
- Montoya remains 22nd in the point standings; 197 out of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
