Late Race Incident Results in a 34th-Place Finish for McMurray at Talladega
TALLADEGA, Ala. (October 7, 2012) – Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates driver Jamie McMurray had one of his best races of the season before it abruptly ended with just five laps remaining as the result of an on-track incident while he was running in fourth-position. It was his second appearance of the season at Talladega Superspeedway on the 10th anniversary of his first-ever NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career start. The No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet started the 500-mile race in 24th-position and ran with the lead pack all race long, leading more laps than any other driver, before the wreck resulted in a 34th-place finish for McMurray.
The green flag flew to signal the start of restrictor plate-racing on the 2.66-mile, tri-oval track and the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet looked strong in the middle groove, running three and four-wide for the first handful of laps. McMurray had already worked his way into the top-five before the first caution flag flew on lap 17, allowing the No. 1 Chevrolet to pit for fuel only. After restarting sixth, the Bass Pro Shops car consistently ran two-wide with the lead pack and used the outside lane to dominate the field by lap 79.
McMurray became a fixture in the lead pack, leading a total of 38 laps and was in contention for the win before the No. 1 spun coming down the frontstretch with only five laps remaining; a consequence of the close, pack racing at Talladega Superspeedway. The incident resulted in a 34th-place finish for the Bass Pro Shops team.
“The Bass Pro Shops Chevy ran great all day,” McMurray commented after the race. “It was great to get back up there and lead some laps; I wish the outcome had turned out differently. I was getting a push from another car and got loose, sending me into the grass on the frontstretch. The guys did a great job and I feel like we had the car to beat.”
• McMurray received the 3M Lap Leader award for leading the most laps (38) at Talladega
• The Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 marked McMurray’s 10th anniversary of his first-ever NSCS career start
• McMurray remains 20th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will head to Charlotte Motor Speedway next weekend for the Bank of America 500. The race will air live on ABC and radio stations affiliated with PRN on Saturday, October 13 at 7:00 pm EDT.
