Bristol, Tenn. (March 20, 2011) – The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series was back in action over the weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. The No. 42 Target team looked to be on their way to a top-five finish at the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile” until a loose wheel would change the fate of the race team. After 500 laps, the Target Chevrolet would be credited with a 24th-place finishing position.
Juan Pablo Montoya started the Jeff Byrd 500 in the 36th position and quickly began his move to the front. After a competition caution on lap 50, the No. 42 Chevrolet had already moved up 18 spots in the field. That momentum would continue and Montoya broke into the top-10 on lap 161, where he was running lap times consistent with the leader. The promising run would falter after a pit stop on lap 247. Montoya returned to green flag racing and radioed in that the right front tire felt loose. The No. 42 Target Chevrolet returned to pit road under green flag conditions to replace right-side tires, placing them two laps down. The team turned their focus to gaining as much track position as possible for the remaining half of the race. In the end, the Target Chevrolet crossed the finish line in the 24th position.
After the fourth race of the 2011 season, Montoya sits eighth in the point standings just 24 points behind the point’s leader.
“Tough day for the Target team,” Montoya remarked. “The bright side is we had another strong car. We just need a little more so we can start winning some more races.”
Up next on the schedule is the Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. The west coast race is scheduled for Sunday, March 27 at 3:00 pm (ET) and will air on FOX and radio stations affiliated with MRN radio.
