Fontana, Cal. (March 27, 2011) – Juan Pablo Montoya made his 150th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career start over the weekend at Auto Club Speedway. With that milestone came his first pole position of the 2011 season and his third top-10 finish after five races on the schedule. The Target team moves into Martinsville Speedway eighth in the point standings; just 26 points out of first.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series headed out west to Fontana, Cal for their only race at the two-mile facility. The No. 42 Target Chevrolet was quick in the first practice session and followed that up by laying down the quickest lap time during qualifying Friday afternoon. Montoya placed the No. 42 on the pole for the sixth time in his career.
When the green flag waved, the Target car led the field for seven laps before settling into the top-10 for the majority of the 200-lap event. Montoya battled a tight handling race car as the laps progressed but never strayed too far away from the front pack under long green flag conditions. The Target Chevrolet visited pit road a total of seven times for tires, fuel and adjustments and when he checkered flag waved on lap 200, the No. 42 was credited with the 10th-place position. The solid performance marks the third top-10 finish for the team after just five races into the season.
“The Target Chevy was good on the short runs but started to get tight the longer we ran,” remarked Montoya. “Brian (Pattie) and the crew worked on the car all day and made some good calls. The goal was for a top-10 finish and that’s what we got. I’m pretty happy.”
Teams head to Martinsville Speedway this weekend for the Goody’s Fast Relief 500. The race will air on FOX and radio stations affiliated with MRN on Sunday, April 3 at 1 pm (ET).
