Late Race Penalty Ends a Top-10 Run for the Target Team
Sparta, Ky. (July 9, 2011) – The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series headed to Kentucky Speedway for their inaugural race over the weekend. The No. 42 Target Chevrolet started in the second position and spent the majority of the 267-lap event up in the top-10. After a pit stop with 12 laps remaining, Montoya was issued a speeding penalty and sent to the back of the field. The 42 found itself in the 15th position when the checkered flag waved.
For the first time in 10 years, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series raced at a new track venue. Kentucky Speedway hosted a test session on Thursday and resumed a regular two-day schedule Friday and Saturday. Weather moved through the area on Friday causing teams to run a shortened practice session. The rain continued and qualifying was cancelled. Teams lined-up Saturday evening based on practice speeds.
Montoya started on the outside row and found himself running with the top-10 for the majority of the race. Crew chief, Brian Pattie, continually reported in that the No. 42 Target Chevrolet was the fastest car. The closing laps of the Quaker State 400 quickly reversed the fate of the team. Montoya pitted a final time for tires and fuel when NASCAR radioed in that the No. 42 needed to start at the tail end of the longest line on the restart. The Target Chevrolet received a penalty for exiting pit road too fast and would restart in the 18th position. Montoya gained three spots and would eventually cross the finish line in the 15th position.
The 15th-place finish advanced Montoya up one position in the point standings. He now sits 13th, 32 points out of the 10th spot for Chase contention.
