TOP-FIVE FINISH AT BRICKYARD FOR BASS PRO SHOPS TEAM
Speedway, Ind. (July 31, 2011) – Jamie McMurray began the defense of his 2010 Brickyard 400 victory from the 16th-position and the Bass Pro Shops team had a race filled with challenges for finding the handle on the No. 1 Chevrolet. In the end the race would come down to fuel strategy and crew chief Kevin “Bono” Manion made the call for a late splash-and-go stop under caution that would allow McMurray to stretch the fuel run to the end of the 160 lap event and bring the Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet home with a fourth-place finish.
Feeling confident that the team would have a car capable of posting a strong qualifying time, The No. 1 team would focus the majority of their efforts during first two practice sessions on Friday and the final practice session on Saturday on race set up. As Sunday’s race unfolded the crew would be challenged with a car that seemed to change throughout the event as McMurray would report the car being both loose and tight handling. Near the 100 lap mark of the race McMurray even radioed the crew and stated that he thought something had broken on the car.
After a quick assessment of the car during the final caution, the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops car was deemed ready to get back on the track. However, the team would need to conserve fuel to make it to the end of the race, as many of the other leaders would require one more pit stop. McMurray made the most of the strategy, even leading five laps in the closing stages. Unfortunately the conservation mode would force him to keep a slower pace and the No. 1 Chevrolet would bring the car home in fourth-place.
McMurray commented, "I got by the No. 27 because I wanted to be leading the race. I knew it was going to be easier to defend than it was going to be to try to pass when everyone decided to take off. We got a little bit lucky today but I’m really happy for our team. We've had a tough year and a lot of things go wrong and a lot of bad luck and it’s very nice to have good luck. We had Johnny Morris here form Bass Pro Shops today and the folks from Lift Master. We had a good Chevy and had a good finish."
• McMurray is currently 28th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points
