McDONALD’S TEAM BRINGS HOME A 16TH PLACE FINISH IN ATLANTA
HAMPTON, Ga. (September 6, 2011) – The No. 1 McDonald’s team headed to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Labor Day Weekend looking to maintain the momentum from their fifth-place finish at Bristol. Jamie McMurray qualified in the 25th-positon on Saturday and after postponement of the race from Sunday, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams would finally race Tuesday afternoon, under cloudy skies and intermittent rain showers. McMurray would bring the McDonald’s Chevrolet home with a 16th-place finish.
Following practice sessions and qualifying Friday and Saturday the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates team felt they had a car that would be very competitive for the race. When the green flag waved, McMurray was able to drive the McDonald’s Chevrolet from the 25th starting spot up to the top-10 in running order.
The No.1 crew would benefit from early cautions allowing the team to make adjustments on pit road under yellow as the field was slowed by nine cautions, including a 24 minute red flag after the mid-way point of the race. The McDonald’s team would make use of the red flag period to discuss strategy for the remainder of the event. After the restart, McMurray ran as high as ninth and continued to run competitively until after the final pit stop when he radioed the crew saying that he may have something broken in the right front. He would have to preserve the car and ultimately a 16th-place finish.
“We had a good car today and our pit crew gave us really good stops. Our car just seemed to fall off and lose the handling after only a few laps. We would gain positions right after pit stops, but would give them right back on a long run”, said McMurray.
-McMurray moved up one position in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points to 25th
-The No. 1 team has moved up two positions in the NSCS points the last two weeks
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will make its next stop at Richmond International Raceway for the Wonderful Pistachios 400 September 10th at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) on ABC and MRN radio affiliates.
