Target Team Rally’s Back to Finish 18th at Texas Motor Speedway
FT. WORTH, Tex. (November 6, 2011) – The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series visited the Lonestar State over the weekend for the 34th race of the 2011 season. Juan Pablo Montoya qualified in the 15th position and overcame handling concerns, going a lap down, and significant damage to the right front fender to finish out the day in the 18th position.
The Target team unloaded the same chassis they ran at Charlotte Motor Speedway earlier this year and quickly got to work. Teams were given three practice sessions and two qualifying laps before Sunday’s AAA Texas 500. Montoya would place the No. 42 Target Chevrolet 15th on the starting grid and found himself battling with the handling early on. Pit stops were frequent in the early laps to help the handling and by lap 135 of 334 crew chief, Jim Pohlman radioed in that Montoya was the fastest car on the track.
The team overcame several obstacles during the second half of the race. Montoya pitted under green flag conditions when an untimely caution fell just a few laps later placing the No. 42 a lap down. To add to the situation, an on-track altercation occurred alongside of Montoya and caused significant damage to the right front fender. The team made multiple stops on pit road for repairs and took a wave-around in the closing laps to get the No. 42 Target Chevrolet back on the lead lap. Montoya made a final charge at the end of the race and drove from the 30th position to 18th when the checkered flag waved.
- Montoya has two poles, two top-five and eight top-10 finishes this season
- Montoya has the highest number of laps run this season out of any driver with 10030 including all 12 of the Chase contenders
- Montoya has no DNF’s in 2011
The 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has two races remaining this season. Teams will head out west to the newly repaved Phoenix International Raceway this weekend. The Kobalt Tools 500 is Sunday, Nov. 13 and will air on ESPN and radio stations affiliated with MRN at 3:00 pm ET.
