LATE RACE INCIDENT SPOILS HIGH HOPES FOR BASS PRO SHOPS TEAM AT DAYTONA
Daytona Beach, Fla. (February 27, 2012) – After postponement from Sunday’s scheduled start of the 54th running of the Daytona 500, a delayed start on Monday and a two-hour red flag during the race, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) finally put the finishing touches on Speedweeks 2012. Jamie McMurray who started the “Great American Race” from the 19th-position in the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet was credited with a 31st-place finish after a late race incident knocked the team out of competition.
The strategy for the No. 1 team was to hang back from the larger pack of cars in the early going to try and avoid incident, then make a charge toward the front later in the 200 lap race. All was going according to plan as the Bass Pro Shops Chevy was racing among the top-10 by lap 130 and stayed connected to the front of the field until a tire went down on lap 189 and spoiled the hopes for victory in the Daytona 500.
McMurray commented after his accident, “It is unfortunate to have a tire go down at that point of the race because I think we had a really good car that was very capable of winning the race. I feel really good about the direction we are going, but what happened yesterday is just one of those things that is just so unfortunate.”
- The 2012 Daytona 500 was McMurray’s 10th start in the “Great American Race”
- McMurray has a total of 19 career NSCS starts at Daytona International Speedway including two victories (2007 Coke Zero 400 & 2010 Daytona 500), three top-five and four top-10 finishes
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will head to Phoenix International Raceway next for the Subway Fresh Fit 500 on Sunday, March 4, 2012. FOX and MRN affiliated radio stations will have live coverage.
