Target Team Finish 17th at the “Tricky Triangle”
LONG POND, Pa. (June 10, 2012) – Juan Pablo Montoya and the Target team visited the newly repaved Pocono Raceway over the weekend. This marked the first of two stops at the track labeled the “Tricky Triangle” as it consists of three turns unlike any other track on the circuit. Montoya started the No. 42 Target in the 17th-position and overcame an early brush with the wall to finish out the day in 17th.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series spent five days in northeast Pennsylvania, two of which were for testing on the newly repaved surface. Montoya and the team were happy with their results going into the race weekend and looked to rebound from a string of bad luck. The No. 42 Chevrolet started from the 17th position and unfortunately brushed the wall as the Pocono 400 went green flag racing. The Target team brought the car down pit road multiple times for repairs and adjustments. Pit strategy fell into place as the laps continued. Montoya and the Target team stayed out on track as two caution flags flew in the closing laps and battled it out until the end. When the checkered flag waved, the No. 42 was credited with the 17th-place position.
“Well, things didn’t start out so well for us at the beginning of the race,” Montoya remarked. “I got loose and got into the wall early on. But this Target team turned it around and we fought until the very end for positions. I think if we didn’t have that damage we would have been a top-10 car.”
- This was the first race ran at Pocono Raceway since they repaved the 2.5-mile tri-oval, known as the Tricky Triangle.
- Montoya led three laps during the 160-lap race
- Montoya fell one position in the point standings to 21st; 86 points out of the Chase for the Sprint Cup
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Michigan International Speedway next weekend for the Quicken Loans 400 on Sunday, June 17. The race will air live on TNT and radio stations affiliated with MRN at 1:00 ET.
