McMurray Brings Home 19th-Place Finish From Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (May 1, 2010) – Jamie McMurray spent the majority of the first-half of Saturday night’s event at Richmond International Raceway well inside the top 10, running as high as the fourth position. The driver would start to report handling problems as the race wore on during long green flag runs. McMurray’s team would work to fix his machine, making several air pressure and chassis adjustments, but the changes would fall just short in being able to help McMurray recover after falling back. The driver would continue to battle, but would eventually finish the 400 lap event in the 19th position.
McMurray and team went to work on Friday morning, as the first practice session of day provided much promise for the team when they posted the fastest lap of the session. The team would draw the 14th position for qualifying, posting the 8th-fastest time of the session. McMurray and the No.1 Bass Pro Shops / Tracker Boats team would roll of 8th for Saturday night’s feature event.
As the green flag waved Saturday night, McMurray would quickly make his way inside the top five, running in the fourth position for most of the first-half of the 400-mile event. By lap 72, McMurray would start reporting that the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops / Tracker Boats machine was “too loose.” Even still, McMurray would continue to run inside the top 10, falling only to the sixth position by lap 170. However, a combination of long green flag runs and band handling would cause McMurray to lose ground on the field. By lap 377, McMurray would find himself running in the 23rd position. With a few more cautions, and just 20 laps remaining, McMurray would stay out, allowing him to gain a few positions on fellow competitors both by racing and pit strategy. Unable to gain his lap back towards the end of the race, McMurray would continue to battle for position, and would bring his No. 1 Bass Pro Shops / Tracker Boats Chevrolet home in the 19th-position.
The finish drops McMurray two spots to 19th in the 2010 Point’s Standings with 1,104 points, just 109 back from the coveted 12th position.
McMurray and the No.1 team will regroup as NASCAR heads to the track known affectionately as “Too Tough to Tame,” Darlington Raceway this weekend. The familiar Golden Arches of McDonalds will return to the hood of McMurray’s No. 1 Chevrolet. The Showtime Southern 500 will take place on Saturday, May 8 at 7:30 pm (ET). The race will air live on FOX and radio stations affiliated with MRN.
